Welcome to Reception Class!

Terms 5 and 6 in Reception Class with class teacher Mrs. Chisnall and teaching assistant Mrs. Hoveman.
During Term 5, Year R will be looking at The Sea. We will read a range of fiction and non fiction books and think about life both on and under the waves. We are hoping to arrange a trip to a local beach and will think about some of the jobs and activities which rely on the sea. We are already thinking of what our role play area will be: ideas range from an underwater cave (with mermaid and octopus!), a pirate ship and a treasure island.
We will also be starting swimming lessons. Despite several children wanting these to be in the sea, they will take place in Hythe Swimming Pool! With the warmer weather there will also be a chance to practise athletic skills ready for sports day.
In term 6 we will change the focus to minibeasts which will need a lot of sharp eyes and nimble fingers as we search to see what’s lurking in the nooks and crannies of playground and field. We will extend our study to creatures which live in shallow water as we go stream dipping with the help of the Brockhill Country Park rangers. This will be a very hands-on topic with lots of opportunities for sorting and classifying (watch out David Attenborough!)
Both these topics will involve a lot of creativity in role play, music and arts and crafts: we will be led to a large extent by the children’s imagination.
In number work we will consolidate both addition and subtraction, thinking about how these skills are important in everyday situations (e.g. shopping). Our topics lend themselves to further exploration of patterns and shapes and measuring.
Our RE topics are New Life (Term 5) and The Church (Term 6) and further information will be sent out in our parental letter.
In term 6 the whole school is holding a special PHSE week which will focus on aspects such as road safety, healthy eating etc.
All in all the children will have an action packed two terms as they begin to get ready for the transition into Year 1.
If you have any concerns about your child's learning or any other queries please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see me.
