Welcome to Year 1

Mrs. E. Folkard – Class Teacher and Mrs. J. Milnes - teaching assistant
YEAR 1 TERM 5 AND 6. In terms 5 and 6 the children will continue to study Numeracy and Literacy on a daily basis. The topic for term 5’s Literacy will be Non fiction books with a few weeks looking at Poetry. We will be exploring, in depth, how to use the features of a non-fiction book such as contents, index and glossary. The children will also be making their own non fiction book. The literacy topics for term 6 will be Instructions, Dictionaries and Poetry. The children will be learning to read and follow written instructions as well as writing their own instructions. They will also explore how to use dictionaries to aid spelling. In Numeracy, the children will continue to develop their number and calculation skills, their knowledge of shape, space and measures and learning how to collect, use and analyze basic data. During term 5’s ICT sessions we will be looking at ‘Representing information graphically’. This involves collecting and representing data, using charts and tables. Term 6 sees us learning about instructions and making things happen. This has a cross-curricular link with literacy. P.E. will be taught on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please ensure P.E. kits are in school at all times. Earrings are not allowed to be worn during P.E. sessions. Unless the child is able to deal with earrings themselves it is advisable that earrings are not worn to school on these days (KCC Regulations).
In Science during term 5 we will be studying the topic 'Growing plants'. This will focus on learning about how plants grow, the parts of a plant and identifying plant species. For the practical application of their learning the children will be growing and caring for their own plants. In term 6 we will be looking at ‘Sound and hearing’. The children will be exploring different types of sounds, the structure of the ear and how sound travels.
In P.E. we will be focusing on Athletics and gymnastics.
Term 5’s R.E. topic will be ‘Resurrection’. Within this topic we will be learning about what the resurrection means to us, the stories of Jesus’ appearances to the disciples and the story of doubting Thomas. Term 6 begins to look at miracles. It explores some of the miracles that Jesus performed, people’s motivations for doing good deeds, understanding the love that Jesus has for mankind and the trust that people have in Jesus.
During term 5 in P.S.H.E. we will study the topic ‘Relationships' in which we will explore the different relationships that the children have and how these can affect their lives. In term 6 the topic will be 'Changes'. This topic aims to prepare children for the move from year 1 to year 2.
In term 5 we will be exploring sculpture and will be linking our work with science by using natural materials to make sculptures. During this term we hope to visit Broad Oak in Canterbury for an art workshop.
HOMEWORK - Your child is expected to read at home on a daily basis. Please ensure the link book is signed to that effect. The children will also be given two pieces of homework a week. At the beginning of term 5 there has been a change to spelling tests (as written in the front of the spelling books). From now on the children will be expected to form the letters correctly (see information sheet sent home for details) as well as spelling each word correctly in order to receive a gold card. 100% on the spelling test, without correct letter formation, will still be celebrated in class and with a well done stamp. The homework will be sent home on Friday and a spelling test will be taking place on Monday. There will also be numeracy homework for the children to complete.
Throughout the year the children will also have the opportunity to explore their own ideas and learning in the child initiated activities both in Golden Time and after they have finished their own formal tasks. If you have any concerns about your child's learning or any other queries, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see me.
