Year 2

Welcome to Year 2 – Terms 5 and 6!

The class teacher is Mrs. Deacon.

The teaching assistants are Mrs. Wilkinson and Mrs. Doolan.

In terms 5 & 6 we have literacy and numeracy lessons every day.

In literacy during terms 5 & 6, we shall continue exploring stories written by the same author and extended stories written by significant authors.  Poetry will also be a focus during these terms.  We will explore different types of poetry, looking at similes, rhyming patterns, alliteration, limericks and play on words.  Children will also learn about the features of non-chronological reports.  We will continue to focus on punctuation, use of connectives, wow words and sentence openers, as well as daily work on phonic patterns.

In numeracy we shall be covering all the strands included in the National Numeracy Strategy, namely number work, measures, shape, data handling and problem solving.  It is essential that children are able to recognise and write numbers to at least 999 and be able to state the number that comes before and after any given number.  Children should also be able to count in 2s, 5s and 10s to 100.

History and Geography will be taught alongside each other during the coming two terms.  The History aspect will focus on what seaside holidays were like in the past, where as during Geography lessons we will be looking at how different seaside holidays are today.  If you, or anyone you know, have any old photographs of Folkestone Harbour or the beach we would be really pleased to look at them!

In Science we will continue with our topic on electricity and forces and the final term will focus on carrying out investigations based on the themes fairytales and dinosaurs.

In ICT we will be looking at controlling a floor turtle.  This will be linked to our maths work on position and direction.  In ICT we will use the internet and search engines to find information to support other areas of the curriculum.

In Art we will carry out some artwork around the theme “buildings”.

In DT children will explore different ways of joining materials.  They will then design and make their own puppet.

PE will include dance, outdoor games and outdoor adventurous activities, focusing particularly on team work.  The children will also participate daily in wake up, shake up routines!

In Music the children will be learning to play the boomwaker and singing continues to be taught weekly by Mr. McNeice.

In RE this term (term 5) we will be looking at the module “Eastertide” and in term 6 we will be focusing on the “Gifts of the Holy Spirit”.  A newsletter will follow.

Children in Year 2 are always expected to try hard and achieve their full potential!

You can support your child by reading regularly at home and signing your child’s contact book.  It is also important that your child completes the homework set on Friday and returns it into school on Monday.  If you have any concerns about your child’s learning or any other queries please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see me.
