Mrs Brayshaw Class teacher Mrs Reid Teaching Assistant
Bienvenue! (Welcome) to Year 3 from the class teacher Mrs Brayshaw and the teaching assistant Mrs Reid.
It’s hard to believe that we are almost coming to the end of another academic year. It has certainly flown past, although it’s not quite over yet, as we still have two more terms full of exciting challenges and fun to get through.
This is an overview of the work to be covered in terms 5 and 6.
In terms 5 and 6 Literacy and Numeracy will be taught on a daily basis. In Literacy we will continue to develop our speaking and listening, reading and writing skills at text, sentence and word levels through several new topics.
To begin, we shall be looking at writing both formal and informal letters for a variety of purposes, which will lead us into our exciting new topic on ‘Hythe Town’ through which the children will be exploring and producing a variety of Information texts. However, we will not simply be thinking solely about informing people about Hythe, but also thinking about how we could persuade more people to come and visit all the wonderful places in our local area. The children will be amazed as they discover, through their own research, the historical treasures that lie around them! Finally to end the year the children will explore writing Dialogues to produce a short play.
Thank you for continuing to read, on a daily basis, a variety of genre at home, as this is crucial to developing all of your child's Literacy skills. (Don’t forget to sign those books!) In addition to this, the children will continue to have spellings sent home on a Monday and a test will take place on the Friday.
Our History and Geography topic for the next two terms will be delivered through our topic on ‘Hythe’. In DT, which will also be linked to this topic, the children think about how to design and make a moving boat, using a pneumatic system. Within our Art lessons, we are looking forward to Sue Carter, from Bodsham, coming into class to help us develop our drawing skills. Watch out for our work on this site later on in the term!
In Numeracy, we shall be covering all of the strands included in the National Numeracy Strategy which will reinforce and extend the children’s knowledge of numbers to 1000 and calculation skills, their knowledge of shape, space and measures and data handling.
In Science we are continuing our topic on ‘Rocks and soils’, with particular emphasis on developing their ability to describe what they have found in experiments and making links between cause and effect. The children will explore a variety of rocks and discover how they were originally formed. They will also spend time making close observations and comparisons of the rocks, identifying their properties and discover why certain rocks are more suitable than others for specific jobs. During the last term we will be learning about ‘green plants’, which will be an excellent opportunity for those ‘green fingered’ children who are involved in the gardening club to learn more about caring and growing plants successfully! Don’t forget to ask lots of questions!!!!
The teaching and learning of Religious Education in year 3 takes on an extra special dimension as some of our children will soon be making their First Holy Communion. I am very fortunate to be a part of this exciting time with them as they prepare for this special event. In the following two terms we are covering two themes ‘Celebrating Easter & Pentecost’ and ‘Being a Christian’. Letters will be sent to parents explaining how you can support these topics with your children. In PSHE we will be ‘Looking after ourselves’ where we will be examining various aspects of leading healthy life styles.
In French we will continue to develop our language skills through lots of fun and lively activities and definitely lots of repetition. Please continue to practise the new vocabulary (which can be found in your homework folders) and don’t forget to revise the old ones too, especially as our pen pals are coming to visit us on the 14th of June. Très bon travail les enfants!
In music we have made a lot of progress with our ‘ocarinas’ (practice does make perfect!) and have mastered several songs! Well done! Also in music, we will be having fun ‘Painting with sound’ and ‘exploring singing games’ which will conclude our musical development for this year.
In PE the children will continue to develop their knowledge and skills within the areas of cricket, rounders and gymnastics. Please can you ensure that while the weather is so bitterly cold outside, that your child has suitable outdoor PE kits in school at all times.
If you have any concerns about your child’s learning or any other queries, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment to see me.
Best Wishes!
Mrs D Brayshaw
