Welcome to Year 6 from the class teacher Mrs. Dewey

and the teaching assistant, Mrs Foster.
Terms 5 and 6 are a very exciting time in year 6!
May 10th-14th is SATs week and year 6 parents have already received a booklet explaining what happens this week. In between the tests we shall make sure we fit in some stress-busting games on the field! I know the children are going to rise to the challenge at this particular time.
During the 5th week of term we are going to undertake a special project which is top secret at this stage - but I hope it will be a lot of fun.
Week 6 is of course our residential trip to Hayling Island – more details to follow. (Are we excited??)
After a well deserved rest (the staff!), we return to school on Tuesday 8th June for term 6.
During this term, we shall be looking at what life was like in Victorian England and the children will be able to choose to study some of the aspects of this subject that they are most interested in. We may work towards a presentation evening for parents at the end of term but this will be entirely in the children’s hands.
Also during the term, a visit from a mobile ‘Astrodome’ will kick start a topic on earth, sun and moon and for the geographers we shall be doing some work on coastlines.
A week entitled ‘Looking After Yourself’ is scheduled for the whole school in July. This will explore living a healthy life-style, keeping safe and preparing for the world of work. During the term, activities and discussions in Year 6 will also address some of the issues and concerns that the children may have about moving on to secondary school.
Finally, we shall be preparing for, and taking part in, a number of sporting tournaments throughout the summer. Let’s hope the sun shines!
I hope the children all enjoy these last two terms at primary school and throw themselves into all the events and activities with gusto. It makes me feel tired just thinking about it all!!

In our topic on volcanoes some children simulated a volcanic eruption with the help of some vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Why does this happen? What happens in a real volcanoe?
